Beyond the corridor

I half walk, half stumble down the dimly lit corridor, my breath shaky. I feel sweat trickling down my face onto my tongue. I turn to a corridor on the left and come to an abrupt halt. My hairs rise and a cool chill runs up my arms and neck. I run my hands over my arms and take deep breaths, the chill disappears but the sensation that came with it stays. The feeling that someone’s behind me, inching closer with every second. I walk faster until I break into a frantic run. My hair falls in front of my eyes and I tuck it behind my ear but it just falls back. As the sensation gets stronger I run faster. Everything feels like a whirlwind, my body shakes as it yearns to stop, threatening to collapse. I push through it and keep running. Looking far into the distance I see light. I run towards it and the nearer I am the more I squint. I raise my arms up to my eyes and slow down as I move forward into the blinding light.

As I walk on the light dims out and reveals a door in its place. Reluctantly I turn the handle and pull open the door. I step through and it feels as if I’m floating? I look down and I’m on a sort of grass pedestal that’s high up in the air. I scream at the top of my lungs, my fear of heights getting the best of me. “Kindly, refrain from screaming, your highness.” A voice to my left says “It disturbs the animals.” I turn and see a stubby old man on a pedestal similar to mine. “Your highness?” I stutter as I look around my surroundings“Yes, you.” The man replies as if it’s common knowledge looking at me as if I’m crazy.
